Fear, Risking and Taking on the World

Have you ever taken a risk? Faced something you’re afraid of? We all have, though some more than others. And whether it’s going skydiving or talking to someone you don’t know, it takes courage. I know when I steel myself and face those fears by taking a risk, I feel invincible, like I could take on the world. I am ready to tackle my “to do” list, no matter how frightening because I know, at least in that moment, I can do it.

But inevitably, time passes. The courage I once had seeps away and is replaced by that old comfortable friend, fear. The longer I go between taking those risks the easier it is to slough them off. But I’m getting back on track. I’m tackling that list of risks one at a time. I know I can do it. I’ve done it before. And once I do the first one, the rest will fall into place.

What I’ve been whipping up

In these months of absence, I’ve been busy. I finished a new novel and turned in my manuscript just last week. It’s hard to let go of those creations. I’m always finding something more to tinker with or change; a word choice that isn’t right, a plot hole or dialogue that doesn’t feel authentic. Though in the end, I released it and my fear of imperfection.

New great reads

I just finished reading My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson.  A collection of award winning short fiction told in her fresh and unique voice.  A powerful must read for anyone.

In my writing community, I have the distinct pleasure of reading manuscripts before they go to press.  I am so excited to be a part of Evelyn Puerto’s reading group.  Her new novel is a beautifully written, exciting new fantasy.  Monica MacKinnon’s working on a fantastic new haunting Highland tale told only the way Monica can.  I’ll be sure to let you know when you can pick up your copies of these new books.

I’m excited to begin again.  To take risks and push through those fears.  If you’ve recently taken a leap and pushed through something you were afraid of, let me know in the comments.

Keep reading and keep risking
