As I finished the last pages of The Fiery Cross, Diana Gabaldon’s fifth book in the Outlander series, in preparation for the fifth season of the television series based on Gabaldon’s novels, I feel a sense of longing. After all, the series won’t return until February! What am I to do? Thankfully, I picked up The Comyn’s Curse by M. Mackinnon.
This is an easy read that takes you on a tour of the Highland’s history via a modern romance tale and, oh yeah, there’s a deadly curse and ghosts too! Mackinnon is clearly very well versed in Scottish history as well as the current political climate (and not to mention a fan of the Outlander series herself). This novel has something for everyone; talking books, misunderstood ghosts, romance, political plots, plenty of historical gems, and a malevolent curse that must be broken.
One can’t help but fall in love with Aubrey Cumming, a book-loving, tender-hearted young woman who, after a messy breakup, heads to Scotland to heal, become acquainted with her ancestral home and break a centuries-old curse. Aubrey, not surprisingly, has sworn off men and relationships even though the only way to break the ancient curse is to have a man from a specific family fall in love with her. Well, I’m sure you can guess what happens next! Aubrey lands right in the middle of a love triangle between two handsome Scottish lads. As the story unfolds, Aubrey finds herself connected to the Highlands in ways she could have never imagined; solving murder mysteries both current and from the past. The cast of delightful supporting characters brings wisdom, humor, and intrigue to the story. You’ll be on the edge of your seat and if you’re like me, rush to buy book two!
The Comyn’s Curse is the first novel in her Highland Spirits series. Check out M. Mackinnon on her website. Her novels are available on Amazon,
